FROGS are on the move in Okehampton and drivers are being asked to be particularly vigilant in Ranelagh Road where hundreds of the little creatures are heading to their breeding ground.
The first batch of frogs arrived at the pond at Ranelagh Road a few days ago and soon they will be coming in their droves.
Official keeper of the pond David Wright is making his annual plea to drivers to watch out for frogs crossing the road after dark for the next four weeks.
'Drivers have been very good in the past and I witnessed a lorry driver once gently moving his vehicle from side to side in the road to avoid the frogs,' he said.
'As soon as it is damp and wet they start coming across the road from nearby houses and gardens. In the evening from my house, which is about 30 yards away from the pond, I can hear them all croaking and it sounds like rumbling motorway traffic.'
Ranelagh Road's water feature has been a migratory pond for many years and despite at one time being under threat by new development it was saved from destruction because of a petition by local residents.
