THE proposed move of Tavistock war memorial from Guildhall Square to the parish churchyard is still on hold, pending an archaeological survey on the church grounds.

The project to move the memorial began several years ago, following a public consultation in the town which revealed 80% of residents would prefer to see it in the churchyard, rather than in a car park by the public toilets.

The Tavistock branch of the Royal Marines Association last month wrote to the town council, which is responsible for the memorial, to ask for the latest news.

Dave McDowall, chairman of Tavistock RMA, said: ?We keep getting asked by our members and quite a number of Tavistock residents about what progress has happened on the preferred move of the memorial.?

Mr McDowall said although the RMA was the driving force behind the move, it was fully backed by the majority of the town?s residents.

Members of the council?s properties committee heard £3,610 was needed to carry out the survey in the churchyard, which could conceal parts of the historic Tavistock Abbey.

Cllr Peter Jones, chairman of the finance committee, suggested TV?s Tony Robinson of the Time Team programme should be contacted to see if he would like to be involved.

But members were told the programme would not be interested, because the churchyard was within a conservation area.

Cllr Maxine Gibson asked if any of the services? associations would be willing to help with the cost.

Town clerk Roger Howard said: ?I?ve obviously done a lot of investigations into it and I?m not having any success. If we were being forced to move it, there could be help, but we?re not.?

The committee agreed as the town had requested it, the council should try to move the project forward. Members agreed to defer any further action pending a meeting of the finance committee in the autumn, when the cost of the survey could be put into next year?s budget.
