EXCITEMENT, top class training and life-saving skills are all on offer to Princetown residents who take up the challenge to become a retained fire fighter.
Devon Fire and Rescue Service are holding two special recruitment evenings at the village fire station in an effort to try and attract more volunteers to the retained crew.
Assistant divisional officer Tom Taylor said: 'We are getting desperately low, so we are trying to encourage recruitment — at the moment I could easily take on four to five people.'
The open evenings will be held during drill nights on April 11 and 18.
'It will be an opportunity for people to come along and see what the firefighters do and the way they serve their community.
Tom said the fire service relied heavily on prison staff in the past but it had become increasingly difficult for them to respond.
He said the fire service is looking for people who would like to serve their community and, particularly, can provide cover during the day.
In addition to firefighting training, the Princetown unit also has co-responding skills. This means they respond in emergency medical situations when they can be on the scene of an incident more quickly than an ambulance.
Volunteers need to live within five minutes of the fire station by foot or within a mile by car.
Anyone, male or female, will be welcome to join the fire service provided they are over the age of 18 and pass the selection procedure.
Tom said the job teaches volunteers self reliance and self confidence, in addition to vital skills.
The firefighters are paid a basic retainer, fees for call-outs, actually attending an incident and for drill nights.
Anyone who would like to know more about being a retained firefighter at Princetown will be welcome at the open evenings, starting at 7pm. Alternatively, contact Tom on 01752 333608.
