WALKERS from West Devon are being invited to lace up their walking shoes for an event in Lydford to raise funds for Parkinson's UK.

'Walk for Parkinson's' at Lydford Gorge will take place on Sunday, April 26 at 10.30am, during Parkinson's Awareness Week (April 20 to 26).

Parkinson's Awareness Week helps the public to understand the reality of life with Parkinson's and what they can do to help.

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson's UK, said: 'We are delighted to be hosting a Walk for Parkinson's event at Lydford Gorge.

'Walking is a great way to stay fit and healthy.  I would encourage everyone in Devon and the South West looking for a challenge to walk with us to help find a cure.

'The funds raised from the Lydford Gorge Walk will make a real difference to our work to improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson's.'

The three-mile walk will explore spectacular sights such as the 90ft White Lady Waterfall and the sound of the roaring water of The Devil's Cauldron.

The Lydford Gorge event is a strenuous and challenging walk.

Some sections are very close to the river, have steep vertical drops (some are fenced) and involve climbing over wet slippery rock.

There are some flights of steps and some paths are uneven and are very narrow but there are handrails to use.

Good strong footwear with good grip is essential.

The walk is not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or buggies.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads.

The walk is one in a series of 25 Walk for Parkinson's events, that will be held across the UK during the spring and summer months.

There is no minimum sponsorship required to take part, but the charity is hoping to raise more than £250,000 from the 25 events, so suggests walkers aim to raise at least £50. The entry fee is £10 for adults (£5 for under 16s).

All walkers will receive a fundraising pack with tips and advice, sponsorship forms and an exclusive T-shirt to wear on the day.
