A WOMAN walking on Dartmoor was treated at Derriford Hospital on Tuesday after she was attacked by a cow.
Louise Adams, 31, a teacher from Exeter, was walking near Princetown when she was charged by a black Galloway.
She said she tried to fight the animal off with her walking stick but was knocked to the ground and trampled. A man walking nearby managed to beat off the animal and call for help on his mobile phone.
Ms Adams suffered leg, head and internal injuries — a wound in the top of her leg required 12 stitches and she was treated for a gash on her head.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Terry Faull said the cow had a calf nearby and would have been very protective.
'It's clearly a very unfortunate incident — but very uncommon,' he said. 'We have taken note, but there's not a great deal we can do — Dartmoor is an open access area.'
Ms Adams was discharged later that day and is recovering at home.
