VOLUNTEERS in West Devon are being sought for a crucial helpline service which provides a confidential 'listening ear', information and practical support to women experiencing domestic violence.

West Devon Women's Aid Helpline and Outreach Project was set up in March 2001. The number of calls in the first year was 174, with numerous face-to-face meetings set up with experienced, trained volunteers, providing support and advocacy on an ongoing basis as part of the Outreach Project.

There were estimated to be more than 200 reported incidents in West Devon alone last year, taking into account that such incidents are under reported by at least five to one.

West Devon Women's Aid is planning a new training session for volunteers to start in September. Anyone who thinks they could volunteer to help in this work is asked to contact Janice Goodwin, co-ordinator on 01837 53321. The helpline number for anyone experiencing domestic violence is 01837 55228, Monday to Friday, noon to 3pm.
