THE FUTURE of a group which supports young carers is under threat because of a shortage of volunteers.

Young Devon needs a few committed volunteers who can help to ensure the Okehampton and Tavistock Young Carers Group continues.

Project manager at Young Devon Katherine Mullan said the loss of the group would have a major impact on the many inspiring young people who deserved its support.

Young Devon works with more than 195 young carers in West Devon and the South Hams who care for a family member who has a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, learning disability or issues with drugs or alcohol.

Katherine said: 'For many young carers it is very important that they have the chance to be with other young carers who understand what they are going through, have time to enjoy leisure activities and see that they are valued by others for their caring role.

'Our group also gives these young carers access to direct support from their project worker on a regular basis and this is vital for some who are often in very difficult situations at home.

'If the group had to close due to a lack of volunteers it would be devastating for the young carers and would isolate them even further.

'Theirs isn't your standard childhood, they can't do the same things as their peers but, uncomplaining, they provide the care that their loved ones need.  They deserve our support.'

A detailed knowledge is not necessary, just time, energy and desire to help. A few hours is all that is needed each week.

Groups meet in Tavistock and Okehampton and each needs volunteers. The group meets one evening a week between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

There are arts and crafts, games and cookery – so no specialist skills are required more then time and a willingness to spend it with young carers.
