A WEST Devon support group set up to help people with central vision loss is celebrating its second birthday this month. West Devon Macular Disease Support Group was established by sufferer Esme Wheeler, who said the group has thrived in the last two years. It meets at Tavistock Methodist Lower Church Hall on the second Thursday of the month between 2.30pm and 4pm. Esme said: ?We have speakers on general subjects and also particular ones pertaining to the disease. The group is made up of very vibrant and friendly people ? we get all sorts, some with very bad vision indeed, but they all chat away happily and laugh and communicate in a way that sometimes sighted people don?t tend to do. ?We offer each other support and share our experiences ? we can also offer knowledge and guidance where required.? Esme said there is a core of around 20 members regularly attending the group, with others attending on a less frequent basis. And there is another group in Tavistock which may also be of interest to people with visual difficulties and which is keen to expand its membership. Tavistock Library Listening Group runs along similar lines to a reading group, except the books are on tape. It meets on the third Friday of the month in the library, between 11am and noon. Esme said: ?The group chooses the same tape to listen to at home and the next month, discusses it. ?Several members of the Macular Disease Support group have regularly attended the listening group over the past year, but the library would like to open up the group to sighted people too, in other words, they would read a book at home, and people like me would have the tape.? The next meeting of the Tavistock Listening Group will be on Friday May 19. Anyone who would like more information about the Macular Disease support group or the listening group can call Esme on 01822 618561.
