KELLY College hosted a visit from Vice Admiral Adrian Johns CBE ADC, Second Sea Lord and Commander in Chief Naval Home Command on last Thursday, as he conducted the biennial inspection of the school's Combined Cadet Force. The inspection started with a parade, enabling all the cadets and contingent officers to meet the Admiral — he also presented a number of certificates and awards. Later the Admiral toured the college and the area around Tavistock, visiting the cadets who were engaged in many of the activities undertaken as part of the routine weekly programme. These included the climbing wall, where the Admiral impressed the cadets by reaching the top, canoeing on Tavistock Canal with students practising portage drills for the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon this Easter, a camouflage and concealment exercise, indoor rifle shooting practice, and a nautical navigation lesson. The Admiral arrived at the College in an aircraft belonging to the school's affiliated ship, HMS Argyll and there was an opportunity for four cadets to experience a short flight in the Lynx during the afternoon. Admiral Johns was also able to see first hand how the CCF courses are closely linked to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and how the cadets benefit from the many parallels between the two programmes A spokesman for Kelly College said: 'The college was extremely pleased to have been able to host such a prestigious visitor and former Kelly parent, and appreciated the great interest and support shown by Admiral Johns for the Contingent and all those working in support of the cadets, on what was an extremely memorable occasion.'
