AFTER several seasons without a cricket team to maintain the Brentor playing field, a group of villagers have decided to reclaim the recreation spot and initiate a campaign to see the field used more regularly by parishioners.

A question mark has rested over the field's use since the departure of the last cricket team and the frustrating stealth of the field's tractor — crucial for towing the grass cutters.

The Brentor villagers' first initiative has been to organise a free family fun day at the field, which will take place on Sunday July 17 at 2pm.

The event will be open to the public and will offer a range of stalls, games and sporting competitions. There will also be a barbecue and other refreshments.

In anticipation of the event, the village has already invested in new goalposts and upgraded its football pitch to a seven-a-side pitch, which will host an entertaining football tournament for anyone who feels like a kick around.

The aim is to raise enough money to fund its regular maintenance as well as to improve some of the facilities and equipment, draw attention to the space and to launch a run of future activities that see the field used by the local community.
