YELVERTON has been the target of a crime wave recently, and three men are believed to be responsible for a whole series of incidents on two separate nights. The first incidents took place in the small hours of Wednesday, July 9, and CCTV footage gathered from around the village shows three men at around 2.30am. Car wing mirrors were knocked off and windows smashed on cars in the Meavy Lane area of the village. An electronic gate opener was smashed with a rock or something similar and a pile of newspapers and magazines was set alight in the doorway of the Co-op store in the village centre. Police said the three men appeared to have brought baseball bats with them as the window of an estate agent was struck. Then, in the early hours of Friday, July 11, three men once again came into the village. This time police said they came well prepared with instruments to cause damage and try to break into premises, using a substantial crowbar to try to force open the door of the Yelverton Garage and Post Office. A police spokesperson said: 'They failed and in frustration smashed the window of the Yelverton Stores. One man climbed in and opened the till but there was no money in it and the thieves left empty handed.' Police are considering the possibility that the men are from the Plympton side of the moor, with a connection to Yelverton. Two of the men were wearing hoodies, but the third wore a flat cap. Officers believe this may be his personal fashion statement, and hope that anyone who knows a young man who habitually wears such a cap to get in touch. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting crime reference number CR/088162/14 and speak to detective constable Wayne Thielmann, who is the lead investigator in this series.
