A PLAYGROUP in decline six months ago has made a dramatic turnaround, thanks to local support and hard work by parents and committee members. The future of Harrowbarrow and Metherell Pre-school Playgroup was under threat when a reduction in child numbers meant it might have to close two of its three day sessions. But with playgroup leaders and parents determined to see it continue, plus generous donations from local people and companies, the group now has two fully booked days, is looking at re-opening its Friday session and planning to run a parent and toddler group. Two new members of staff have also been employed. Playgroup leader Claire Harrison said: 'Things couldn't be more different than six months ago, when we hardly had enough children for one full session. 'In a rural community it is so vital to have this type of setting. 'There is no facility for young children and parents to meet and make new friends. 'This makes the transition into school so much easier for the children. 'We have great links with the school here and it all helps make those first days a little easier if you know some other children of the same age.' Thanks have been expressed to all the people who gave donations to keep the group going. Mrs Harrison said there was also a plan to create a little park for the under fives in the area, because there was no such facility available. To celebrate the success of the group, a Grand Open Day is being held this Saturday, March 17, from 10am to 2pm to which anyone is welcome. There will be refreshments, a jumble sale, bric-a-brac, book sale, cakes and games. To find out more about the event or the playgroup contact Karen Bennett on 01579 351056.
