RESIDENTS of Kelly Bray are set to receive some equipment which will help to save lives in an emergency. Following the installation of a community defibrillator in Callington in December, leftover funds and continued support from community organisations has led Callington Town Council to promise the purchase of a defibrillator for Kelly Bray. The device, which delivers a shock to the heart to get the heart pumping again after someone goes into cardiac arrest, costs around £1,200 and the council is close to acquiring the remaining funds. Town councillor Jeremy Gist said: 'The town council installed the defibrillator in Callington courtesy of support from the community. We felt, because of the distances involved, we would like to repeat the initiative in Kelly Bray. 'Kelly Bray is a bit different because it doesn't have large public buildings to house the device or CCTV to keep watch of it like in Callington, so we have had to find a suitable location for it.' Cllr Gist said the council has been in discussions with the landlady of the Swingletree in the village, who has agreed to house the defibrillator in the pub. 'It is a great location — in the centre of the village. It's a popular venue and we anticipate that some of the staff will learn how to use it.' He said the council was close to securing the remaining funds and hoped it would be a matter of 'weeks not months'. The device will have a purpose-built cabinet to house it which will be less expensive than the one for Callington because it will be indoors so there will be less security issues. The council has a couple of staff members who are trained as guardians who will be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment and training to use the device will be available from the council's own qualified training teacher. 'This is a great community project that has been facilitated by the town council with great community support,' said Cllr Gist. Gerald Pridham, of the Kelly Bray Residents Association, said having a defibrillator for the village would be a 'great thing' and that it was 'fantastic news' that the council was close to securing it for the community. Any community organisations or individuals who would like to contribute to the final funds for the Kelly Bray community defibrillator should contact Callington Town Council.
