THE Healthy Horrabridge project, launched last September to promote the health and wellbeing of Horrabridge residents, is on track to achieve its aim of bringing long term benefits to the village. The year-long project, supported by UnLtd and co- ordinated by John Howells, aims to involve residents of all ages. One of the most enthusiastic responses has come from the staff and children of Horrabridge Primary School. Their challenge was to spread the word about the role of regular exercise in promoting health and wellbeing, and to do so they created an 'Active Alphabet'. Children from all year groups were allocated a letter of the alphabet and created a poster depicting activities beginning with that letter. The success of the Active Alphabet project will be celebrated at an 'Active Horrabridge' day being held at the school tomorrow (Friday), when prizes of health sports equipment will be awarded for the best three posters. Sports coaches will be there giving instruction and exhibitions of many of the sports featured in the posters. The 5X30 project, which is supporting the initiative in Horrabridge have arranged for table-tennis coach Lorraine Robinson to be at the school for the day. She will be running table tennis sessions for the children between 10am and noon and for adults/community from 1.30- 2.30pm. Parents and villagers are welcome. The school is producing a Healthy Horrabridge recipe book, which will be launched at a gala celebration event in the school from 1pm to 3pm on September 20. Among the specific successes of the year-long project so far has been the new salsa club, which now meets every Friday in the village hall. A successful walking group has been started, and many existing groups have seen a membership boost, including short mat bowling, badminton, Morris dancing, keep fit, and aerobics. John Howells, project co-ordinator said: 'We set up the project with support from UnLtd to last for one year only, in the hope that the new activities would be able to support themselves after that. We are confident that this aim will be achieved, and that Horrabridge residents will continue to benefit from the wider variety of activities now available to them.'
