THIS was Tavistock ladies? hockey team 2nd XI?s first match after the Christmas period and what a game of teamwork and determination they pulled off.
Having conceded two early goals from a skilled Launceston team, a superb midfield of Becky Hutton, Lisa Butler and Cathy Downing worked hard to drive the ball upfield and stop Launceston gaining possession.
With a strong defence behind them Tavistock worked well to keep the pressure up and get the ball into the scoring zone.
After many attempts, getting the ball upfield but being unable to score, a quick run through by Sarah Barrett slotted the ball behind the Launceston goalkeeper?s line.
Tavistock, having brought the score back to 1-2, continued to play a hard defensive game and, with some beautiful passes between the midfield and forwards, to use every player and keep the pressure up.
During the second half, after a quick team talk and change of defensive tactics, Tavistock were going for the kill and were desperate to pull the score level.
Every player maintained a high standard and shortly after play resumed, Gaynor Pollard battled for the ball and worked hard to score a vital goal.
Launceston continued to keep their defensive line strong and played some great ball from left to right, keeping Tavistock alert when they were being attacked, with some amazing clearances from Nell Trotter and quick tackles from Hayleigh Bickford and Jo Solman.
Zoe Viggers had a stormer of a game in goal, making some fantastic saves and keeping the defence strong.
