A FORMER submariner from Callington is hoping to raise thousand of pounds for Breast Cancer Care by undertaking an epic journey to cycle across Vietnam. Chris Thorpe will be riding hundreds of kilometres with a friend in a bid to raise £3,500. He said: 'My cycle ride takes place in October/November this year and I will be cycling 650km from Hanoi to Sapa with my mate Mick Limming. 'Both my mum and sister have recovered from breast cancer, while Mick lost his mum to it. 'I have pledged to raise a minimum of £3,500 in order to take part. I am also obliged to pay a lot of my own expenses so as much as possible will go to Breast Cancer Care.' This is the second time the pair have done a charity cycle ride together. 'We are both ex-submariners who were based at SM2 in Plymouth during the 1980s/90s,' said Chris. 'Twenty-five years ago we completed a sponsored cycle from Barrow-in-Furness to Llanelli in aid of cot death research.' As part of his fundraising efforts, Chris has also lined up a Johnny Cowling evening at Callington Town Hall on July 24, a five-a-side tournament at Callington Football Club on June 22 and ongoing charity auctions at Beech Park Auction Rooms in Callington. Chris said: 'If you have anything that you no longer have use for and would consider donating for auction, Beech Park Auctions will place your item into the next auction. 'This is a really satisfying way to have a clear-out!'
