Werrington A

TAVISTOCK won their first game of season at current league leaders Werrington last Saturday.

A good tight Werrington bowling attack made it hard work for Tavistock to make any headway on the runs front. The opening Werrington attack of Bye and Peterson (3-32) bowled good tight spells, with Tavistock batsmen Wellard and Dhanjal having to fight for every run.

Hicks (2-21) and Biddle (2-27) also bowled well, with Dhanjal and Wellard only managing to put 50 runs on the board in the first 20 overs. The fall of Wellard (22) and a couple more cheap Tavistock wickets brought Bellamy to the crease who livened up the innings with a brief big hitting 13.

In form Wood continued his recent rich vein of batting form with an inspired 51, which saw him take on the Werrington attack with great gusto. With the support of Folley 13 (not out) Wood managed to take the Tavistock total to a respectable 145 for 8 in the allocated overs. Werrington though could reflect well on the way they bowled and fielded as they left the field for tea.

Tavistock took to the field knowing they had to bowl equally as well as Werrington if they were going to defend their total. A good opening spell of tight bowling from Folley (1-23) at one end, and the lively pace of Bellamy at the other end soon had the Werrington top order in all sorts of bother.

By the 15th over Bellamy had scythed through the Werrington top order accounting for the opening four batsmen with Folley chipping in with one more.

This was a superb spell from Bellamy (4-16) from which Werrington never recovered. Some dogged resistance from Werrington's middle order of Wills (14), Bailey (15) and Peterson (15), held up proceedings but the final outcome was never really in doubt.

Tavistock's Poppe stepped up and turned in a superb patient bowling spell of nine overs which asked many questions and eventually reaped the reward of three wickets, with Chidzoy and Friend also picking up a wicket apiece.

Werrington's innings was finished off some 46 runs short of their target.

This was a good all round performance from Tavistock with the team now showing signs of starting to gel as a unit.

Next week Tavistock are entertained by local rivals Calstock.
