AFTER a long wait, BATs Badminton Club played their second match of the season recently by traveling to take on the Plymouth University B team in Division 4 of the Plymouth and District Badminton League. In the first of the men?s doubles rubbers David Williams and Alan Berry scored 15 unanswered points in the first game, followed in the second with a 15-2 win and taking the rubber victory. In the second of the rubbers, David partnered Greg Amann. The first game saw the University pair take the initiative 10-15 but the BATs pairing fought well to take the second and third games 15-11, 15-7 and the rubber point. The third rubber saw Alan partner Greg and get off to a slow start with the University pairing taking the first game 10-15. Alan and Greg turned the rubber around, winning it by taking the next two games 15-8, 15-3. In the first of the ladies? doubles rubbers, Steph Ferrao and Abi Maunder failed to make much of an impression when they lost it 15-6 to a strong University pairing. They came back in the second game and won it 15-10 to level the rubber but lost out in the third 12-15. The second rubber saw Steph play with Rachael Williams. They had a hard fought first game, going down 14-15 at the last moment. Unfortunately the University pair came good in the second game to take it, and the rubber, 3-15. The third rubber, with Abi partnering Rachael, was again a challenging one with neither pairing gaining the advantage totally until the last few points in the third game when the University ladies served out to win the rubber. Scores were 14-15, 15-12, 9-15. The first of the mixed doubles rubbers saw David and Abi dominate the first University pairing and win the rubber in two games 15-8, 15-5. The second rubber saw Alan and Steph lose a tight first game 15-13 but the change of ends changed their fortune. After losing the first point of the second game Steph proceeded to serve 15 unanswered points - a rarity in badminton at any level - to take the game 15-1 and level the match at one game all. The third end started off scrappy until halfway through when again Alan and Steph found their touch, to take the game and the rubber 15-8. The third mixed doubles rubber saw Greg and Rachael play some good badminton against a more experienced University pairing. In the end Greg and Rachael were unlucky to lose to the more experienced pairing but they made them work for every point before going down 13-15, 11-15. At the end of the evening BATs young and up-and-coming team had again taken on more experienced players and come away with a well deserved 5-4 victory.
