THE speed and the skill of the play showed the depth of talent available at the two clubs. As with all sevens, there was end-to-end play with incisive running resulting in an exciting match.

Tries were scored at alternate ends giving a score of 12-10 at half time. Beth Neave and Elspeth Mackellar outpaced the defence to score twice for Tavistock, Elspeth converting one with a perfect drop-kick.

In the second half, Tavistock started to distance themselves with three well-taken tries. One from a scrum 15 metres in from touch, Rachel Watson seeing the weaker defence on the blind side, broke one tackle and ran through to score. Elspeth MacKellar converted again.

Late in the game two tries from Plymouth brought the score line closer, to give a fairer reflection of the game.

In the Tavistock forwards, Elsie Kirby and Jo Abel were awarded players of the match having carried the ball well and might easily have scored. Their forward play led to Tavistock's domination of the second half loose play.

TAVISTOCK came out of the trap like greyhounds and scored within two minutes. Some loose play after the kick off brought the ball out on the Tavistock left. It went through four pairs of hands to winger Toni Hoare who scorched down the line to score. Just before half time, a reply try from Cullompton, brought the scores even.

Soon into the second half after a further Cullompton try, Tavistock captain Ali Huntley broke through to score, which Fiona McCall converted superbly in blustery conditions to bring the scores even.

After winning the scrum and within seconds of the final whistle Alice Upcott used her strength fought through to cross the line giving Tavistock the match. The inter-passing and lay-offs from some of the newer players including Rosie Tidball and Browen Rundell, guided by Amy Neave, Fiona McCall and Ali Huntley made this match thrilling to watch. The player of the match was Toni Hoare for her all round skill and speed.
