A FASHION student from Tavistock has won first prize in a competition to design a modern outfit, inspired by the Victorian clothes on display at Morwellham Quay.
Two winning outfits designed by Jeanette Phillips from Tavistock were given their catwalk debut at a fashion show at the Plymouth Guildhall last month.
For her prize, the outfits will now go on display at Morwellham Quay for the rest of the summer season.
Ex-Tavistock College pupil Jeanette said she had enjoyed attending the fashion show which she had also taken part in as a model.
As part of a design assignment to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the first-year BTEC Higher National Diploma fashion students from Plymouth College of Art and Design were set a brief to design a modern-day outfit, based on ones worn at Morwellham Quay.
Jeanette said she took inspiration for the structure and form of her winning design from a combination of Victorian outer garments and underwear.
Nicky Goldsmith, a costumier from Morwellham Quay, who had donned the Victorian dress she wears at Morwellham to brief the students about the design project, said the winning entry took the shape of a corset for a jacket design, with puffs at the tops of the sleeves.
Two designs of the white jacket have been made to be matched with a black skirt or a black pair of trousers, both designed by Jeanette.
Mrs Goldsmith arrived for the original briefing to launch the assignment wearing a purple velvet costume circa 1860, and talked to the students about the period design detail of her outfit.
After the outfits have been displayed at Morwellham, they will be returned to Jeanette, who will be able to include them in her portfolio.
