Cockington v Chagford

IN this top of the table clash at the picturesque Cockington ground, Chagford found runs hard to get and wickets fell at regular intervals.

But a 7th wicket stand at 58 between Ian Mathewson with a stubborn 29 and another game innings of 39 by Tony Niven enabled Chagford to reach a moderate 130 all out.

Scott with 5-27 and former county player Stuart Lott with 3-31 were the pick of the home attack.

With 47 overs to reach this total it looked an easy target, but Cockington started slowly with Del Owen, mustered into the bowling, taking the first two wickets.

Veteran Mike Wreford, making his first league appearance of the season in the absence of county players Hutchings and Jenkins, then collected the prized scalps of Scott (3), Furze (5) and Stuart Lott (2) in a spell of 13 overs to finish with 3 for 20.

With their dismissal Cockington shut up shop and at the end of 47 overs had only reached 61 for 8 wickets.

Owen finished with 2-19, Nolan 2-16 and skipper Nick Rowe 1-6, as he marshalled his attack.

Chagford v Britannia RN College

Friendly, 40 overs

SKIPPER Mike Wreford was run out on the last ball of this exciting game as the match finished as a tie.

Earlier it had looked like an easy victory as 3 of the first 4 College batsmen were out for ducks. Only a recovery engineered by Leeder (34) and Hogg with an attractive 26 enabled the College to reach 109 all out, Nick Rowe and Ken Moss taking 4 wickets apiece on a perfect batting wicket.

In reply, Chagford lost wickets at regular intervals and only John Middleditch (30) and Martin Hibbs (15) reached double figures and with wickets falling the scene was set for the run-out of the last ball, which kept the spectators interested all the way.

Pick of the counter attack was Navy player Adrian Shaw with 3 for 24 off 13 overs.

Chagford v Tony Nivens XII

Friendly

A FEATURE of the Chagford innings was a stand of 83 between Del Owen, 63, and in-form Ian Mathewson, 61, and with other contributions Chagford were able to declare at 201 for 5 wickets.

This was always going to be a low total to defeat against a strong visitors' batting line-up.

With 6 of their first 7 batsmen reaching double figures the end was in doubt until the last over as the visitors reached 190 for 7.

Sara (41) and Willie Potts returning to his old club (48 not out) and Collins with a cameo innings of 25 were the pick of the visiting batsmen.
