TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held its annual meeting on February 3 which was well attended. Outgoing chairman David Isaac gave an overview of activities for last year saying it had been a very satisfactory one for the club with a full programme including participation in the Plymouth and District League Competitions, club tournaments, friendly matches and social events. Club sessions had been well attended which new members had soon joined and the courts were being used during the day. Membership was up on last year with a total of 252 for all categories. The new floodlights for courts 4 and 5 bringing them up to the standard of those on the new courts 6, 7 and 8 had made a big difference particularly for late play in winter evenings. Club coach, Linden Hardisty, had had a major impact on activities with his professional and competent approach, in particular with the coaching of juniors and had set himself a goal this year to expand mini tennis for young juniors and graduate them to higher levels. In the league new members participated where the men?s B team had done well being promoted to Divn 1, the ladies? B team promoted to Divn 3 and the juniors? C team promoted to Divn 3, an exceptional achievement with the club fielding some very young players. Mike Jefferies, who runs the juniors, expressed thanks to Linden and parents who helped in so many ways without whom it would not be possible to play in the league. There was a good entry for the club tournaments with some new winners. Finances were healthy on an operating basis. But with the considerable expense of the new floodlights, the loan repayments to be paid off for the major expansion in 2001, maintenance and new developments, an average increase of 10% in subscriptions was necessary. As well as all the usual competitions this year the club would also be entering a men?s team in the Devon County Division 1 National League led by Linden. For this competition all players have to be LTA rated. After a lapse of two years the club would again host a Tavistock Junior Open Tournament, to be held over two weekends late September/early October. For this year Tavistock town mayor Norma Woodcock would continue as president and David to stand down as chairman with Mike Prout taking over. Bill Smyly and Roy Cook would continue as vice presidents but Ken Sanders was standing down due to poor health. With the exception of Ken Watkins who had been standing in for ?House? and served the club for many years, other officers were re-elected with the addition of Gaynor Pollard as ladies? captain. David would be taking over the job of ?House? from Ken for continuity. Anyone wishing to join the club call 01822 854162. For coaching; 01822 610846 or, 07956548294.
