VANDALS have attacked a forest of home-made speed limit signs in Lamerton, erected by residents last week in an attempt to slow drivers speeding through the village.

Some of the 30mph signs have been changed to read 80mph, including the official highway sign at the entrance to the village.

Yorkie Malone, the resident spearheading the anti-speeding campaign, said the signs were changed at around 11.30pm on Monday evening.

'Somebody heard them out there — it's an act of vandalism.

'Actually, whoever has done this has done it for us, although they don't realise it. It shows a complete and utter disregard for the law, which adds fuel to our cause,' he said.

Mr Malone said he was due to meet police on Tuesday to discuss the problem of drivers disregarding the speed limit on the main Tavistock to Milton Abbot road through Lamerton.

County councillor Roy Connolly is also to meet residents this week.
