RESIDENTS in Exbourne are being asked to be vigilant after vandals attacked the small bus shelter near the Red Lion Inn.
The rubbish bin was torn off a wall and stolen and walls covered with graffiti. Damage had also been caused by footballs being kicked against the roof from the inside.
The shelter originally housed the well and pump to supply water for the top area of the village, but with the installation of mains water, the building was unused for many years before being converted to a bus shelter.
When the site became a convenient meeting place for young people in the village, the parish council cleaned, decorated and repaired the small building and Ann Warren arranged with schoolchildren to paint a mural in the shelter.
The old shelter is a council asset and if the vandalism continues, a decision will be made about its future.
If anyone sees any damage being done they should report it direct to the community constable PC Nigel Fidock who can be contacted at Okehampton Police Station by telephoning 08705 777444.
