U13s Devon cup Torquay RFC U13s 29 Tavistock RFC U13s 7 In the opening minutes of this quarter final clash Tavistock established that they were not going to be intimidated by a physically larger team. It was clear that Torquay's strength lay in its pack complimented by some fast wingers. Tavistock did well to deny the ball from the wings especially after Torquay opened the scoring with a converted try down the wing. The reply came through Jake Johns with a powerful break with a ball which had been recycled through the backs. It was successfully converted by Henry Kisby. The recent arrival of Ryan Nichol playing at outside centre completed a strong back line which showed its capability of moving forward at every opportunity. The level scoring was maintained until just before the half time whistle when some mishandling on the Tavistock line allowed Torquay to slip over with a try which was not converted. Throughout the match the set scrums did well to secure the ball when being pushed backwards through the feet of hooker Martin Budden and cohesion of Dominic Dewson, Frazer Bayliss and Henry Kisby. The deliberately selected strength of wingers Will Colton and Jake Johns successfully closed down the Torquay efforts to use their wings at wil.l In the second half the pace slowed allowing the ball to get to the Torquay wing who once mobile was almost unstoppable, despite valiant efforts from Tavistock full back Jez Massy- Birch. Two almost identical tries were delivered with the second resulting from a series of missed tackles by a tiring Tavistock. An excellent drive from a quickly taken penalty saw Sam Pluckrose across the line but unfortunately the score was disallowed. It was an enjoyable game of good flowing rugby between two sporting sides. The Tavistock lads can be justly proud of their performance.

Saltash U12s  14 Tavistock U12s 35 THE first half started with some good early tackling from both sides and committed loose play indicating that this encounter was also going to be close.  A couple of handling errors saw Tavistock camped on their own line facing a five metre scrum but the home side was repelled with tenacious defending with Dan Dawes, Josh Birch, Aaron Dobie and loose forward Calum Ross were to the fore in the defensive wall. Tavistock held out to the half time whistle. In the second half  the hard work of the Tavistock forwards saw ball being quickly recycled to the fly half Dawes who broke through to score. The next score was a backline break in the centre from Josh Birch and Nick Bennett, with fullback Finlay Ross taking the ball on to within five metres of the line before Seb Engel went over in the corner. From good field position, Dawes called a move from a scrum 10 metres out and Josh Birch took the ball on the switch at pace to score in the corner. The final try of the second period was finished by Dawes who had looped from fly half. The final period of the game was more even as the players tired and Glen Fuller worked hard with Will Hill and James Best to keep Saltash under pressure in the loose. A mistake from Tavistock under the high ball saw an opportune try from Saltash and at the other end from the restart Charlie Wood was alert to a Saltash mistake and pounced to score for Tavistock.
