TAVISTOCK has landed the Old Kent Road spot on the new Devon version of Monopoly — an 'up and coming' square, according to the manufacturers.

The board game, which already has 17 special regional versions, will have its Devon version launched in October. A spokesman for Winning Moves UK — which has the licence to produce regional versions — said the decision to produce a Devon board followed last year's success of the Cornish version.

'Lots of people from East Cornwall and West Devon asked us for a Devon version, and going on present figures we predict that by the time it is launched orders will be a record,' he said.

A landmark or organisation in Tavistock will take over the Old Kent Road spot, which some people might think was not the most desirable on the board, but the spokesman said was 'up and coming'.

'It is very desirable and high profile. Everyone knows it and it is one of the few places to feature on the cover,' he said. 'It is a top square, although not as exclusive as Mayfair.'

Okehampton and parts of Dartmoor will also be included, but Monopoly chiefs are not revealing which Devon location has scooped the Mayfair spot.

Nominations are

currently being sought for Devon's 'leading icon' officially to launch the game. Game inventor David Sommer explained they were looking for one person that summed up the county.

— the person whose nomination is pulled out of the hat will receive the first game to roll off the production line, hopefully signed by the winning icon, Mr Sommer said.
