TAVISTOCK and District Credit Union is surging ahead in its plans to open for business in October — but is appealing to anyone who can offer premises for the 'people's bank'.
The union signed it's statutory declaration in May — it has now started a savings club for members who were impatient to start saving, rather than wait until the union is up and running.
The next hurdle is accommodation.
Sandy Brookes, chairman of the steering group, said: 'We would very much like high-street premises — one of the best ways to ensure success is for the credit union to be right there in the middle of the community.
'We can hardly open if we haven't got anywhere to hold a collection point in Tavistock.
'We've got somewhere in Bere Alston and somewhere in Horrabridge, but we need something in Tavistock.'
Mrs Brookes said if necessary the collection point could even be separate from the registered office.
'We have tried all different ways of getting hold of premises — the problem is we really don't have much money.'
The credit union's need for office space was put to the town council's properties committee meeting last week.
Cllr Caroline Keane said the council ought to support the credit union — Cllr Ted Sherrell suggested the chairman of the properties committee, the town clerk and the credit union steering group should liaise to see what the requirements were.
The council has some empty premises at the moment, including office space above 13 Duke Street.
Cllr Norma Woodcock warned she would not wish to lose potential long-term tenants by letting space on a short-term basis.
Cllr John Wright said it was council policy to charge a commercial rent for its premises, although for 'worthwhile' causes grants were available.
'If they want to apply for a grant from us, then the council will obviously consider it,' he said.
