AFTER almost a decade, Calstock Unicycle Club has come to an end but it's going out on a high.

The club has enjoyed many successes — travelling the breadth of the country on unicycles, performances at Plymouth's Drum Theatre and Glastonbury Festival and group rides along the Camel Trail, as well as many local events.

There have been a wide range of members over the years, aged from four to 54, and during the club's two hour sessions the different unicycle-based activities ranged from unicycle gladiators to ramp riding and unicycle hockey. Riders have even represented the South West in the national unicycle hockey league.

'At our peak we had over 30 riders each session, which made for a very busy hall,' said club spokesman Sam Taylor. 'The club often spilt over onto the village green and residents may well have noticed the gangs of youths patrolling the street corners on unicycles from time to time. The club really gave Calstock a unique asset and one that owes thanks mainly to the efforts of Ali Knight and Heather MacKellar.'

He said due to work commitments of the people who run the club and no-one else qualified to do it, it seemed like the right time to close. At the last annual meeting, the club divided its limited assets between Tree Aid and two new circus clubs, including a new juggling club that takes place in Calstock on a Sunday evening.

Sam thanked everyone who came to the club over the years and contributed to the 'fun and ridiculousness' which was Calstock Unicycle Club.
