Things have changed at The Art Gallery on Duke Street. Still present are original works by internationally acclaimed artists like Ben Maile, notable Southwest artists such as Nicholas St. John Rosse, there's even the odd Lenkiewicz, but now they share the walls with up and coming local artists.

"Our plan is to offer original works for less than the price of many commercial prints." said gallery director, Richard Varley. "Right now we have more than twenty original works for £300 or less, including oils from £75. Naturally, the artists aren't household names, not yet at any rate, but the works are accomplished and the intent is honest. The focus is on original art by remarkably talented local people."

That said, there are a few prints. "Rolf Harris is a recognised artist and his pictures resonate with many people. We can't compete with London for the originals, so we offer high quality low edition prints, usually on canvas. Other than that, our prints usually support the original pieces in the gallery; works by James Martin, Nicholas St. John Rosse and, of course, Robert Lenkiewicz."

As you would expect, many of the original works feature Dartmoor scenes, but there are also many seascapes, portraits and street scenes. "We try to maintain an eclectic mix, something for everyone. Regardless of style and subject, every piece is technically accomplished and has artistic integrity."

The gallery is open daily from 9:30 AM.
