Tavistock U16s 17

Kingsbridge U16s 12

TAVISTOCK ran out winners in a hard fought game where the forwards dominated play.

An early break by front row Ewan McQueen saw him get into the visitors' half but the resulting penalty came to nothing. Tavistock finally managed to get some quick ball and a probing run from winger Jack Bond ended with a kick through which the defence managed to ground before any Tavistock player could touchdown.

The first score came after the home side forwards put pressure on the Kingsbridge line and following a five metre tap penalty, Ewan McQueen drove over to touchdown.

The second half started with both sides trading possession and probing runs by the Kingsbridge backs were thwarted by good Tavistock defence.

After a series of rolling mauls and rucks, Tavistock were awarded a penalty five metres out and a quick tap and go saw Mark Friend drive over for the second try.

The visitors hit back and a superb covering tackle by Jack Lindsey prevented them breaking through. After a series of lineouts and scrums in the visitors' 22, Niall Murphy scored the classic scrum half's try by picking up off the back of a ruck five metres out and bursting through the defence to touchdown. Tom Simmons converted.

Kingsbridge hit back with two tries to narrow the score. The visitors now sensed a victory but the home side held out to register a thoroughly deserved team win.

WADEBRIDGE open the scoring with a converted try, which was immediately cancelled out by TavIstock with tries from Ali Dawe and Sam Jessop.

The visitors then stepped up a gear and Tavistock's defence failed to cope with a marauding and talented Wadebridge side who quickly responded with two tries and a conversion to take a 10-19 first half lead.

Despite a determined effort, and more effective rucking and mauling, Tavistock's inability to make sufficient tackles and pressurise the visitors' defence, energised Wadebridge who ran in a further five tries and one conversion, without response.

Several battling Tavistock peformances were however noted, with none more so than Eli Crowther.

THE initial stages were dominated by set plays and tactical kicking with little free flowing rugby on display. However, it was Tavistock who looked the more threatening side early on but their backs were unable to make a decisive break. At the other end Plymstock's strong pack nearly broke through but the ball was held up over the line.

As the game opened up Tavistock defended well against Plymstock's penetrating forward surges and countered this with some powerful running by Daniel Dobie and Charlie Carter in the centre. However, the game remained scoreless until the visitors took advantage of loose ball from a lineout close to Tavistock's line to take a 5-0 lead.

Tavistock again had opportunities to score and get on level terms but could not quite do enough to breach the Plymstock defence which held firm. From a deep kick into the home side's half a scrum came the way of the visitors close to Tavistock's line. Scrum half Tom Day was able to break through the tackles of the defence to cross from close range for Plymstock's second try.

As the game went into its final stages the home team tired and strong running and forward drives brought three further tries for the visitors including one from prop Tom Wheeler who managed to stretch out the ball over the line despite the valiant effort of the Tavistock defence.

TAVISTOCK started smartly, despite some confusion between the 22 and try line, but once this had been figured out Charlie showed great strength and skill in the tight. Alex B was like a rampant bull in the loose, with Finn at no 10 offloading selflessly.

Plymstock tackled fiercely; one big hit on Tobias was a cruncher, but the plucky left wing shrugged it off.

Tavistock's rucking and scrummaging was sound, perhaps learning from Okehampton two weeks ago. Although the score was one-sided, Plymstock never let their heads drop, their captain going over in the corner at the death.

TAVISTOCK remain unbeaten after a convincing win for the home side. The first half saw scrumhalf Ben G dominate the score sheet scoring four tries for Tavistock. Plymstock never really looked likely to score, their backs unable to break through the home defensive line, with Dom and Ben putting in some crucial tackles. The front row pairing of Chris and Matt H worked well together, rucking and mauling to win ball for the home team.

The second half began with a try for powerful Tavistock prop Callum almost as soon as the whistle stopped blowing. Followed in quick succession by tries from centres Laurence (2), Cameron, George and a second try for Callum.

Tavistock were able to capitalise on possession and territory, whilst Plymstock squandered their chances.

THE first game saw Tavistock slow to start, losing three tries in quick succesion to a well drilled Plymstock team. However, great play from Luke Lewandowski gave Tavistock their first try with the help of support from Macsen Haynes Parry, Tom Roberts, Morgan Turnock and James Gregory.

Charlie Donoghue kept getting tags while, as ever, Ollie Noy Scott ran his heart out for the team as did Zac Clifford Flower.  After halftime it was a much closer affair, with Plymstock scoring two tries but Tavistock getting one back  through Freddie Grier Rees.

In the second game great try saving tags from Noah Gargett and Jason Blake showed the effort from the Tavistock team and the score of two tries to one to Plymstock, highlighted how close the game was.

The Tavistock try was from Noah but Tom Pearson, Jack Smyly, Joe Burbage and Lachlan Fulton all put 100% effort into the game. Tavistock player of the match was Luke Lewandowski.
