A YOUNGSTER from West?Devon is gearing up to cycle 15 miles in his own sponsored cycle ride for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (LLR).

Seven-year-old Tyler Tomes will be cycling from Coypool to Tavistock along the Drakes Trail on Saturday, October 26.

Tyler, of Bere Alston, was inspired to do the sponsored cycle ride and raise money for others by his cousin Arran, who was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2010.

Tyler's grandmother, Mary Tomes, set up the Okehampton fundraising group of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research around 18 months ago — she became involved in fundraising after her grandson Arran, then aged four, was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Mary said: 'Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research started 53 years ago. Then the diagnosis of leukaemia was a death sentence. Today, because of our research, nine out of ten children survive the most common form of leukaemia. LLR invests in world class research here in the UK.

'I thoroughly enjoy my fundraising for LLR, however, it's not all about raising money. We can also offer support to patients and relatives, and if I am unable to answer their questions, then I will put them in touch with someone that can.

'All of us probably know someone, somewhere that has been diagnosed with a blood cancer — however we won't stop until we have beaten all blood cancers.

'I am very proud that Tyler has chosen LLR as his charity. He often helps me, when time allows, on my stall at various local events and recently has been saying he wants to do a charity cycle ride.'

Tyler will start his ride at Coypool at 10am and will finish at Tavistock Meadows at around 12.30 to 1pm.
