IN their first league match ever from the start the combined forces of Tavistock and Newquay took the game to the visitors.

Every loose ball was pounced on and within 10 minutes the home team were 14-0 up as full back Alex Smith broke through the gap the forwards had created both times. Frankie Rickard converted both from in front of the posts.

The next two tries came from winger Alice Stean. The first one went through the hands of most of the backs from one side to the other, allowing Alice to score in the corner. Frankie converted it 26-0 to the home side at half time.

The next two tries came from the pack with flanker Frankie Rickard and hooker Charlie Notman putting in the finishing touches over the line. Fiona McCall converted one of them.

Plymouth Albion never gave up and they came close to the Tavstock/Newquay line on a few occasions but the defence was unwilling to yield a score to the opposition.

With a lot of tired legs on the pitch, player of the match Alex broke through in the 76th minute and scored her third try.

Alice Stean was tackler of the match in a game where everyone had risen to the challenge.

n This week there is the annual Devon v Cornwall fixture for the Tamar Cup, involving Tavistock girls Amy Neave and Florence Rodgers of the U15s and Rachael Watson, Rosie, who Tidball and Alice Upcott were all selected for the county squads.

The next game for Tavistock/Newquay U18s is against Liskeard Leopards on November 14.
