SHE may not be pulling pints any more but at the ripe old age of 100 Callington publican Vera Ghey can still show the youngsters a thing or two about running a bar.
Up until six years ago Vera was regularly seen in the bar, serving drinks and playing the piano, but now she takes more of a back stage but equally important role counting the money.
Her business partner Gerry Foster said she was a remarkable woman: 'I have been running this pub with Vera for 26 years. She still has a very active brain and counts the money and deals with the VAT.
'We have managed to keep trading when a lot of pubs have fallen by the wayside and after 60 years Vera must be one of the longest serving publicans.'
Vera no longer drinks alcohol, having been diagnosed with angina, but her favourite tipple was a shot of brandy every day.
She and another Callington resident, Sallie Fellows, both celebrated their 100th birthdays within a week of each other and were treated to a visit from Portreeve Rick Lumley and his wife, Sue. Mrs Fellows lives at St Theresa's Residential Home.
Both the birthday girls were surrounded by family and friends, some of whom had travelled from Hampshire and the West Midlands to be part of their special days. Alongside all the gifts and floral arrangements were cards from the Queen.
Mr Lumley said the visits would stay in his memory for a long time: 'I know that Callington is a superb place to live with all the clean, Cornish air but I reckon someone must have put something special in the water back in 1909. Two centuries in one week is pretty good going.'
