THE third meeting of the Westward League combined with the South West Championships was held at Exeter last Sunday.

There was a magnificent turnout of Tavistock Athletic Club runners with 20 members competing in the various races. Conditions were good with a dry course although there was a brisk wind.

In the U13 boys? race Ross Honey was making his first appearance in the league and finished in 34th place. In the U15 boys? event Alex Richards was recovering from illness and finished in a disappointing 15th place with Seb Lee, who was also making a first appearance, finishing in 29th place.

The senior men?s team was significantly affected by the welcome return from injury of Steve

Groombridge. He celebrated his return with an impressive run, finishing in overall 30th place and in a medal position in the Vet 45 category in the championships.

Robin Musgrave finished in 73rd place with Allan Herdman making his debut appearance in the league, finishing as the third Tavistock runner in overall 96th place.

He was closely followed by Mike Lewis in 102nd place with Chris Eastaugh finishing well in 112th place and John Outhwaite in 114th. Peter Bazley came home in 127th place with Roger Hewitt finishing in 130th.

The senior ladies? race included six Tavistock runners, all making their first appearance in the league. Nicole Heryet ran a strong race finishing in 60th place followed by Caroline Alford in 67th.

Immediately behind Caroline was Anna Johnson in 68th place with Carole Edwards completing the trio in 69th place.

Beryl Bowles finished in 72nd place followed by Rhian Johnson in 73rd place.

In the final race of the day three Tavistock runners competed in the U17 junior men?s event. The race was fast and furious and Luke Dumper ran strongly to finish in an excellent sixth place. Adam Holland finished in 16th with Adam Tofield in 21st.

This was another good result for the Tavistock club in this event.
