Devon League
Whitchurch v Dartington
NEWLY promoted Whitchurch were not firing on all cylinders in this their first league match of the campaign. Dartington batted first on a slow wicket of even bounce. Lavis (0-27) and Mills (2-44) bowled tightly and well but with scant reward, to restrict Dartington to 52-2 from their first 20 overs.
However, aided by a series of dropped catches and some unthreatening bowling, Dartington gradually gained in confidence and their scoring rate increased accordingly.
After 40 overs they had reached 193-3, with their No 4 batsman making a century. Stokes (1-18) and Hall (2-21) picked up some useful wickets towards the end of the Dartington innings.
Chasing a total of 227, Rotten (28) and Credicott (40) set a positive tone to the Whitchurch reply and reached 50 after just 10 overs. Hall (44) and Barriball (8) kept the momentum going but a flurry of wickets in the middle order slowed progress and despite a lively 42 for Chappell and a quickfire 10 from Newton it was left to Lavis and Mills to hold out for a draw.
Whitchurch ended 20 runs short on 207-9. Dartington 15 points, Whitchurch 10 points.
This week: 1st XI v Exeter Civil (A), 2nd XI v Ivybridge (H).
