MORE than 700 photographs featuring people and places around Merton and Huish will be on show during a special history weekend next month at Clinton Hall. A display of pictures ranging from the 1870s to 1970s can be viewed at the Village Album event on Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11. The exhibition will feature pictures by famous local photographers Joe Elliott and Henry Bright, and show a selection of photos from the Beaford Archives, courtesy of the Beaford Centre. Joe Elliott died in 1913 but he took significant pictures from 1880s until his death and it was during this time he taught Henry Bright the art of photography. Organiser Philip Collins, from Barometer World, said: 'When Joe Elliott died Henry Bright took over until 1920 when he had a stroke, so we have professional pictures from the late Victorian days to the 1920s. 'The pictures range from working people to places to events that are within the Parish of Merton and Huish.' Mr Collins organised the event in order to repeat the successful picture exhibition which was held in 2005. He said: 'If it's as good as last time then it will be a huge success.' It is also hoped a local film evening, organised by the South West Film and Television Archives Ltd, will take place on Friday, February 9. These include the funeral at Huish of Lord Clinton in 1956 as well as a mix of Devon wide archived films. On Saturday and Sunday the exhibition will start at 10am. Admission is £2 for adults in aid of Merton Church Yard Fund.
