EVENINGS for education and discussions on social and religious issues are being held every Tuesday at Tavistock United Reformed Church.
The URC church, which can traces its roots in the town back to the mid-17th century, has a progressive congregation which is more concerned about what people do than in what they believe.
The Rev Roger Cornish said: 'Tavistock URC takes the Bible very seriously and attempts to discover its original meaning and context. Language, scientific understanding and culture have changed so much that you simply cannot just read it and apply it.'
On Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm 'Tuesday Topics' are for adult education and discussion. Social and religious issues are tackled and people with diverse religious affiliations or none are welcome.
'Tuesday Topics' is affiliated to 'The Progressive Christianity Network Britain'.
On January 20 the group showed the film 'Where should the Birds Fly', which looks at life in Gaza today.
On February 3 the group will enjoy a fish and chip supper and watch a short DVD.
Considering 'Freedom of Speech' will be on February 10. And on Saturday, March 21 there will be a day conference considering Islam: what Muslims believe, how they live out their faith and how to build relationships across the lines of faith.
Mr Cornish added: 'Anyone who finds these topics interesting is welcome to join us. Admission is free to all events apart from the supper!'
