SIX National Trust properties in West Devon are open free to the public this Saturday (September 9). The National Trust, English Heritage, the Civic Trust and Historic Houses Association last Thursday announced the biggest free access day to major heritage sites ever held in the UK. Buckland Abbey, the home of Sir Francis Drake is open to the public, as well as the deepest gorge in the South West, Lydford Gorge, plus the house and gardens at Cotehele and the restored watermill tucked away in the nearby wooded valley. The dramatic Castle Drogo will also be open, as well as the nearby traditional working forge at Finch Foundary.
