WHITCHURCH Wayfarers ladies? cricket team finished third in the Devon Women?s Cricket League, a fine achievement in only their second year of formation.

An end of season evening presentation was held at their sponsors, the Whitchurch Inn, with 20 ladies attending.

Three trophies were presented: team player, Jenny Kay/Gaynor Pollard; most improved player, Coraley Medland; best player, Cathy Griffin.

Alongside teams such as Exeter ISCA, Sandford, North Devon and South Devon, Whitchurch have competed with teams with more than five years more experience and next year with Exmouth, Bovey Tracey and possibly Babbacombe joining the league, it will prove to be highly competitive.

Three players represented the club in Devon colours this year: Cathy Griffin, 4 wickets versus Cornwall and 4 wickets versus Dorset, also best player versus Holland; Lesley Smith, 31 runs versus Cornwall and an unfortunate injury versus Dorset which ended her season. Coraley Medland won first cap versus Cornwall and had a run-out versus Holland.

All three performed admirably.

Everything achieved this year has been down to their enthusiasm, encouragement and regular training. Thanks were expressed to all by Steve Hodge, coach.
