THE Moorland Ladies Summer Shield recently held their finals and presentation night at the Devon Tors, Yelverton.

The evening began with the quarter-finals of the singles competition, Barbara Bettles (Leg o'Mutton), Brenda Pysden (Union Inn), Debbie Tait (Mary Tavy Inn) and Dee Samson (Victoria Social Club) were all narrowly defeated by opponents Penny Fry (Duke of York B), Alison Nicholls (Mary Tavy Inn), Carolyn Jury (Union Inn) and Jan Coley (Mary Tavy Inn).

In the semi-finals, Penny met Alison and took her to a close finish, while Alison's team mate, Jan Coley, was defeated by Carolyn, who played some excellent darts throughout the evening.

The final of the singles between Penny and Carolyn proved to be a tight match, but Penny emerged the victor in a well fought contest.

The semi-finals of the doubles competition saw Sue Cork and Pam Southcott (Devon Tors), meet their team mates, Lorraine Gover and Kathy Gibson. In a close game Sue and Pam went on to meet Liz Tugwell and Brenda Pysden (Union Inn), who had defeated Sarah Stanley and Penny Fry (Duke of York B) to secure their place in the final. Another tight game saw Sue and Pam the victors to retain the title they had won the previous season.

The play-off for the main trophy was between Devon Tors Ladies, the Division One winners, and the Union Inn, Division Two winners. The format took that of a team game of four players, two doubles and four singles. the first to four games the winners. The four from the Union Inn — Sam Allen, Brenda Pysden, Pauline Hoar and Liz Tugwell — took the team games 2-1 from Kathy Gibson, Yvonne Pethick, Pam Southcott and Sue Cork (Devon Tors) and followed with the first double (2-0) through Pauline Hoar and Carolyn Jury from Lorraine Gover and Pam Southcott.

With pressure beginning to show, Sue Cork and Caroline Hammond (Devon Tors) pulled one back when they took the second double (2-0) from Brenda Pysden and Liz Tugwell.

Pauline Hoar went on to secure the first single for the Union when she defeated Pam Southcott (2-0), taking the Union into a 3-1 lead.

All was not lost, though, when Caroline Hammond (Devon Tors) took her single from Carolyn Jury (2-0), and team mate Lorraine Gover won her game over Brenda Pysden (2-1). The deciding game between Sue Cork (Devon Tors) and Sam Allen (Union Inn), could have gone either way, but Sam secured the much needed point and took her team to victory.

The evening ended with the presentation of trophies by landlord, Pete Gibson, and a buffet.

The winter season begins on Tuesday September 10.
