UNSIGNED Devon trio Obedientbone bring their award-winning and inventive dance music to Okehampton for a one-off show later this month. The band, whose music has been described as ?the perfect hybrid of drum n? bass, punk and hip hop?, are looking forward to the year ahead following an exciting 2004. Highlights included not only scooping the award for Best Urban Act at the Diesel U-Music Awards (as televised on MTV and Channel 4) but also the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, which has received much international press coverage. The band began primarily as a studio-based project, but are developing as a live act, and have chosen to kick off their busy schedule for 2005 with their first ever show in Okehampton, at the Charter Hall, on Friday, January 28. The group comprises vocalist and keyboard player Demelza Jennings from Chagford, and multi-instrumentalists James Yardley and Richard Newton Austin, both also from the Dartmoor area. ?Can I Just Say?, a track from their album has generated massive public and industry interest in Australia and New Zealand after being play-listed on leading radio stations, interest the band hopes to build on with a promotional tour there later in the year. The track has also been chosen by BBC Radio 1 to appear as a featured track on their OneMusic website, which showcases the cream of the country?s new talent. Vocalist Dem said: ?We?ve had a fantastic year and have received attention from far and wide. It?s all been achieved from our base on Dartmoor, an area that we all love and are proud to represent. We feel it is important to promote the live music scene in rural areas, hence our forthcoming Okehampton show. ?The music scene in Devon is stronger now than it has ever been after the success of musicians such as Muse, Joss Stone and Coldplay. It?s a rare opportunity for people to enjoy and support talent from the South West and help create a scene to rival any city.? Support at the Okehampton show will come from local band Fosta, winners of battle of the bands contests in Exeter and Okehampton, plus a local DJ to wrap the evening up. Tickets are available in advance priced at £4, from Millennium Music in Okehampton or £5 on the door. Doors open at 8pm-midnight.
