TRIBUTES have been paid to Private Cameron Laing, a soldier who was killed in a tragic accident near Okehampton Camp on Tuesday, April 29. The 20-year-old, a soldier serving with 7 Theatre Logistic Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, was struck by an uncoupled trailer and pinned against the towing vehicle. Police officers received a report of a man suffering a cardiac arrest after receiving a traumatic head injury at the Bracken Tor Youth Hostel at around 9.45pm. Private Laing, from Nottingham, suffered severe head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Both the towing vehicle and trailer were military items and were part of a small convoy heading towards Okehampton battle camp. In a statement, his family and partner said: 'Cameron was an amazing son, brother, boyfriend and expectant father. He was a lovable rogue, always playing practical jokes and the fun in any situation. 'He couldn't wait to be a father to his son, baby Cameron. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched.' Local officers, including CID and the serious collisions investigation unit, attended the scene and began an investigation while in consultation with military personnel. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 839 of 29 April.
