TRIALS are to start later this month for West Devon's entry into this year's Devon Youth Games, which is being hosted for the first time by the borough council in Okehampton on Saturday June 30. Bringing together more than 1,000 young people from eight local authority areas in the county, the event is a magnificent arena for promoting community youth sport. The Games will take place in Simmons Park using facilities at Okehampton College, Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton Tennis Courts and the Astroturf pitch. West Devon trials for the games are being held over the coming weeks and any children interested are welcome to come along. Trial dates, times and venues are: Athletics: school years 4, 5 and 6, boys / girls. Coaching starts Tuesday May 1 from 6pm to 7pm at Tavistock College. Aquathlon: school years 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, boys / girls. Trial on Saturday May 12, 10.30am at Parklands. Badminton : school years 8 and 9, boys / girls. Coaching starts on Wednesday May 23, 5.30 to 7.30pm at Horrabridge Primary School. Cricket: school years 8 and below, girls only. Coaching starts Sunday May 13 10.30am at Whitchurch Cricket Club. Gymnastics: school years 3 and 4, girls / boys. Coaching starts Friday May 4, 5.15pm to 6pm at Okehampton College Gym. Hockey: school years 6, 7 and 8, boys / girls. Coaching starts Monday April 30, 5pm to 6 pm at Kelly College or Saturday April 28, 10 am to 11 am at Okehampton College. Netball: school years 8 and 9, girls. Coaching starts Monday April 30, 5.30 to 6.30pm at Kelly College. Street sports: school years 8, 9, 10, 11, boys/girls. Disciplines: skateboard, BMX, inline. Trial on Saturday June 9, 10am to 11am at Tavistock Skate Park. Trial on Saturday June 16, 10am to 11am at Okehampton Skate Park. Tag Rugby: school years 6 and below, boys / girls. School years 7, 8 and 9, girls. Coaching starts Sunday May 13 11am and noon at Tavistock RFC. Tennis: school years 6, 7 and 8, boys / girls. Coaching starts Saturday 12th May 10am to noon at Okehampton Tennis Courts or Sunday May 13, 11am to noon at Tavistock Tennis Club. Volleyball: School years 7 and 8, boys / girls. Coaching starts Monday May 14 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Parklands.
