TAVISTOCK College’s technology faculty hosted its fifth annual Product of the Year event recently, showcasing the tremendous array of talent the college’s students have to offer in their design and practical skills.

Over 200 visitors attended the competition and exhibition, each voting for their favourite products in categories ranging from product design to fashion and food technology. The work being proudly shown off by the 74 students involved was of high quality and the evening provided an opportunity for students to talk to the public about their projects.

During the event, there was also a ‘tech zone’ which demonstrated lots of new technologies, including the college’s three new 3D printers, two GreenPower electric race cars and a variety of intelligent robots.

The winners on the night were Avie Venner and the Spinner Slinger Sausage Dog for KS3 Product Design; Natalie Rowe and Lauren Isaacs and the Breakfast Munching Muffins for KS3 bake off; Pheobe Smith and Lauren Anderson and the Queen’s 90th Birthday Cake for KS4 bake off; Lucy Carter for KS3 Textiles; Becky Phelpstead for KS4 Textiles; Beth O’Boyle for KS5 Textiles; Ben Prout and his contemporary speakers for Y10 Resistant Materials; Mawgan James and his counter balanced lamp and storage for Y11 Resistant Materials and Dominic Newton and his interactive desk with inbuilt electronics.

Overall Product of the Year went to Dominic Newton.

Tavistock Town Mayor Mandy Ewings said: ‘The innovativeness and creativeness of the students minds was amazing. The hall was full to the rafters with people supporting the students and it was brilliant in there with all the baking, textiles and clever things made by the product design students. I was thrilled to be there, it was just amazing.’

The college expressed thanks to all the event’s sponsors who donated generous prizes for the students.
