YOUNGSTERS from Hatherleigh Training Band enjoyed great success at the Solo and Quartet Contest held at the College Theatre, Bideford, earlier this month. In the nine years and under class, the band narrowly missed out on first prize, with Nicola Grindley being awarded second place, and James Alexander awarded third place, in a field of 21 musicians. In the ten to 12 years class James Cattleman-Lynes, Andrew Collier, Aaron Kimber, Jade Morris and Joshua Quick were all taking part. Joshua, with only two days? practice, achieved an excellent second place from a class of 24. In the section for 13 to 15 year olds, Guy Cologne-Brookes played very well in a strong class. Nigel Letheren excelled to record second place in the 16 to 18 year old section. In the 17s and under class, Nicola Grindley and Jade Morris took third place, with Joshua Quick and Andrew Collier taking fourth spot. The tutors were delighted with the attitude and enthusiasm of all those who took part and said the results reflected the progress being made by the training band. On Saturday, June 17, the band played at the annual bugle contest in Cornwall. A busy July programme for the band gets underway on Saturday, July 1, when they will be playing as part of Hatherleigh Church Fete in the Square. On Thursday, July 13, from 7pm the band will be in the Square again as part of the entertainment laid on for Hatherleigh Festival.
