SPECIAL traffic arrangements have been organised by West Devon police for next Wednesday?s annual Goose Fair in Tavistock, which attracts thousands of visitors to the town.
The centre of Tavistock will be closed to traffic as the streets will be full of traders? stalls and funfair rides.
Sergeant Ian Woods said the following roads will be closed from 5.30pm on Tuesday until 7am on Thursday: Plymouth Road from Drakes Statue to Bedford Square, the square itself, Abbey Place, Russell Street, Market Street, Market Road and Canal Road.
Sgt Woods said: ?The longer street closure this year is to allow for the cleaning of Plymouth Road after the event.
?Council cleaners will start at 6am on the 10th, in order to get the town back to normal for use during working hours.?
South-bound traffic from Okehampton to Plymouth will use Stannary Bridge Road, Mount Tavy Road, Dolvin Road, Abbey Rise and Whitchurch Road, with traffic being directed back onto the A386 at Grenofen.
Cornwall-bound traffic will be directed into Anderton Lane at Whitchurch Post Office, rejoining the A386 at Anderton Straight. Anderton Lane will be one-way to the A386, apart from a short stretch allowing residents in James Road and Anderton Court to access their properties.
The A386 from Plymouth will be two-way to the roundabout at the junction of Callington Road and Ford Street.
Ford Street and Launceston Road to the junction at Spring Hill will be two way, but West Street will be one-way north bound to Bedford Square for the duration of Goose Fair.
Traffic joining from Drake Road will be directed left along Duke Street, Brook Street and Parkwood Road to rejoin the A386 at Stannary Bridge Road.
Vigo Bridge will be one-way towards Parkwood Road and Pixon Lane will be a ?no through road?, apart from access to properties.
Sgt Woods said there would be many additional parking restrictions using ?no waiting cones?, to allow free flow of the abnormally heavy volume of traffic.
?All residents and visitors are asked to co-operate,? said Sgt Woods. ?As in previous years, a tow away policy of any vehicle causing an obstruction will be in operation ? holders of orange disabled badges are advised not to park where the no waiting cones have been placed, as they may well be causing an obstruction.?
Sgt Woods said the car park at Abbey Rise would be specially designated for disabled drivers? parking for the day.
And he warned: ?Any vehicle causing an obstruction will be towed away at the cost of a £30 fixed penalty notice and an additional recovery fee, which will be payable in full before the car is released.?
Tavistock Lions Club will once again be running park and ride schemes, which the police urge visitors to Tavistock to use. They will be situated at the Knightstone end of Yelverton Aerodrome, at Kaminski?s field on the Launceston Road, Harford Bridge Camp Site on the A386 and Lumburn Rise on the Callington Road. The shuttle buses will be running between 9am and 10pm.
Sgt Woods said: ?Goose Fair is only one day of the year and is a nationally known event which brings visitors from all over the county.
?We ask for forbearance, patience and co-operation to make it yet another successful year and add to everyone?s enjoyment.?
