Cornwall Senior Cup second round

Callington Town 0

St Blazey 2

THE victory and the place in the quarter-finals went to high flying St Blazey. But the plaudits must go to Callington who battled from the first to the last minute.

The omens for the home team were not good early on as they fell behind inside the first two minutes. From a free kick the ball ran to St Blazey?s new signing Marcus Crocker and he fired past Andy Brenton.

But Callington battled back. Chris Gerry, who is improving with every game, should have won a penalty for his team on nine minutes but when he was checked by Glassup in the area, he stayed on his feet and his eventual shot was cleared by the backtracking defender.

A minute later and Chris Tilbury almost grabbed an equaliser when he ran onto a great ball but his chip, although beating the keeper, also cleared the bar.

Another improving player, Mark Keith, saw his 20-yard low shot just clear the left of Glassup?s post and it was the visitors who were glad to hear the half-time whistle.

The second half started with the visitors, with an obvious hard half-time team talk ringing in their ears, on the offensive with Crocker, Glynn Hooper and Dale Band all going close.

Two great saves from Brenton kept the score at 1-0. As the half progressed, so the home side came back into the game and might have had another penalty on 70 minutes. Keith made room in the area and his side claimed he was fouled as he moved towards goal. But the referee waved advantage and, with the next kick, the ball was cleared by a defender.

Three minutes later Tilbury was denied a spectacular equaliser by the woodwork from 25 yards. With three minutes left, the Saints counter attacked and Mark Collins was on hand with a calm shot from the edge of the area to beat Brenton and secure the win for last season?s beaten finalists.
