LAST week I was privileged to attend a reception held in Exeter by Devon Community Federation and supported by BBC Radio Devon, among others.
The value of volunteering in these hard pressed times has become even more vital since the Government chooses to cut funding to those most in need. Among those are supporters and workers at the Tavistock Youth Café together with other users of the building. They are saddened by the demise of this facility and it is due for demolition shortly since it is now unsafe for use.
What Tavistock needs is a community centre where young and old can enjoy a variety of new activities, learn new skills and make friends.
When I hear that West Devon Borough Council is wealthy compared to many in the UK, and I see the neglected Focus building on the Plymouth Road, I am wondering why Tavistock doesn't wake up to the needs of its citizens. Funding from Goose Fair would be a great way to initiate a building project.
Our town has a thriving community and much enthusiasm to better itself. Look at the recent fun day event in Bedford Square to raise money for the improvement of the Meadows.
Perhaps we should rethink our priorities and pull together for the sake of all.
