THE cost of erecting the Christmas street lights could be helped by a donation from Tavistock Town Council.

Members of the finance and general purposes committee have proposed a grant of £400 to the chamber of commerce ? with the proviso that it is needed.

In February 2003 the chamber wrote to the council asking it to take on all responsibility for the lights. But the council rejected the request and instead offered to help in kind for 2003, at an estimated cost of £375.

In November the contractor rejected the town council?s cherry picker as unsuitable and the council agreed a request from the chamber for an equivalent grant in lieu, and £300 was paid.

Norma Woodcock proposed making a grant this year and Cllr Roy Connelly suggested matching last year?s figure.

However committee chairman Peter Jones said he felt £400 ?would be reasonable?. It was agreed that the recommendation should go before the full council.
