CALLINGTON Town FC's first and second team managers, Micky Hunt and Steve Blatchford, have been rewarded for their efforts in steadying the club with confirmation of the club's desire for them to continue in the 2008/9 season. At their February meeting, the club's committee voted unanimously to confirm the pair for the coming season. 'I know it seems very early to be confirming managers, but the club want to create some stability in the coming years, and this starts with the managers,' said club chairman Andrew Long. 'Both Micky and Steve stepped up to the plate when no one would touch us earlier in the season and we have been very impressed with the efforts they have put into the club. We want to give them the authority to start planning as soon as they are ready, so issuing a confirmation of their position was a natural next step,' he added. First team manager Micky Hunt was naturally delighted with the confidence shown in him by the committee. 'I am overwhelmed and incredibly happy,' enthused Hunt. 'I am really enjoying my time here in Callington and am looking forward to many years working with Andrew and the committee. Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one west Mousehole 2 Callington Town 1 This victory for the league's second placed side was anything but comfortable as they were given a real scare by an improving Callington side who, despite being without Sebastian Justel, Chris Canham, Chris Gerry, Lee Crooks and Dan Alderton, were equal to their high flying hosts on their first visit to Trungle Parc. New signings Darren Woolley, Chris Truscott and Adam Reid were put straight into the side and equipped themselves well, with Reid especially impressing as a stand in centre half along side the outstanding Mike Vanstone. With the wind blowing across the exposed and bumpy ground, it was the home side who made the first breakthrough when Bulgarian Emil Ivanov beat two defenders before finding Tom Patrick who fired past Town's Slovak keeper Thomas Drinka. Callington came back into the game strongly as they began to find their feet and the home side were grateful for the half time whistle as Town pressed from both wings. The visitors continued to dominate early in the second half and Truscott and Dan Discombe both had good opportunities before Mousehole doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. Reid was down injured when the home side took a quick throw in and despite appeals, the referee allowed the game to proceed and from the resultant attack Gerrans James fired past Drinka for Mousehole's second. Town felt injustice had been done and this spurred them forward again with Discombe, Woolley and Truscott all causing problems to the home defence. On the stroke of 90 minutes a Callington attack on the right saw the ball crossed low into the area and was diverted by the hand of Mousehole defender Snell and Discombe fired home the resultant spot kick. However, the visitors were unable to gain what would have been a deserved draw and were left rueing their chances, and another intervention from the officials that left them with nothing to show for their hard work. The visitors were left stunned by an amazing opening to this game as Callington raced into a three goal lead inside 20 minutes. Darren Benfield fired Town ahead with a fine overhead kick on five minutes, and the lead was doubled shortly afterwards when Ben Edmundson added a second. On 20 minutes, Kevin Blatchford made it three and you would have thought that was that. Someone forgot, however, to tell the Saints that the game was over as they came out on all out attack at the start of the second half. Luke Worrall found the net within a minute and despite Edmundson's quick response to regain the three goal advantage, Worrall hit back with two more to complete his hat trick and put the visitors right back into the game at 4-3. However, Town regained their composure and added a fifth late on from Blatchford to complete the scoring and give themselves an excellent chance of climbing away from the relegation zone in the coming weeks.
